Basic Internet Terminology

  1. Internet—a network of interconnected computer networks that carries information and services, i.e. web pages, e-mail, on-line chat.
  2. World Wide Web (www)—interconnected documents accessible through the internet (like 800 number). Each web site is linked and intertwined with others so it creates a web of information.
  3. URL (uniform resource locator)—the unique address of any web document.

What you need to access internet is a computer, a modem, and browser software.

  1. Modem—a telephone line hooked to your computer so you can communicate with other computers.
  2. Internet Service Provider (ISP)—a large company with a large computer with a number of phone lines which allows you to connect to their computer to the internet. Example would be AT&T.
  3. Server (browser)—software programs that enable you to access the internet and World Wide Web. Microsoft internet explorer, Mozilla, Firefox are examples of browsers.
  4. Search Engine—special sites on the Web that are designed to help people find information stored on other sites. Some are Microsoft, AltaVista, Google, AOL, Yahoo, etc.

Tools to help you on the web.

  1. Browse different topics such as maps, stores, newspapers, weather, through a subject directory (www.google.com) which places subjects in categories.
  2. Bookmark favorite sites—save links to sites you wish to return to. To create, click on bookmarks or favorites, and then add site. To retrieve, go to bookmark drop-down menu and click on site.
  3. Scroll Bars—allow you to move up and down the screen or from right to left to see all of text or pictures.
  4. Mouse—allows you to navigate quickly around the screen.
  5. Keywords—a word(s) used to search for a topic. Use spaces to separate keywords in simple keyword searching.
  6. Printings—remember that documents may have numerous pages. To print a portion, click on file and choose print preview. Determine number of pages. Close print preview. Click print under file menu and in print range, put numbers of pages. Click Print.
